Manukau Heads Lighthouse

Manukau Heads Lighthouse - manukau_heads_lighthouse5.gif

This lighthouse is a recreation of the original one, built after the aforementioned shipwreck. The original was pulled down in the 1920s or so and replaced. The replacement was pulled down in the 1980s and this was rebuilt from the original specifications and reopened in 2006.

View from Manukau Heads Lookout. Auckland has two harbours - one to the east and one to the west - this is the heads of the one to the west. There is a sand bar which at high tide gives very little clearance and a ship sank here in the late 1800s, resulting in 196 deaths

Maungawhau (pronounced maunga-FOE) is a dormant volcano. It's name means "mountain of the Whau trees". This is a photo looking down into the crater. The funny lines around the slope are track that have been formed by sheep and cattle walking up and down the slope.

The black sand in the foreground isn't just the result of a cloud passing overhead. The sand is actually black because it has a high iron content. There is a steel mill near where my brother and his family lives that produces steel from iron extracted from sand.
